Garrett Boone Founder of the Container Store

At a party on Friday night I had the priviledge to sit next to Garrett Boone, founder of the Container Store. In 1978, with only $35,000 in capital, Boone began building the Container Store into what it is today. I was able to pick his brain a bit and understand the history of his store and his decision-making process. After speaking with him I am even more convinced that entrepreneurship is the only way to go. He taught me that it doesn’t take a lot of money to start a company. He said to start with the money you have and see if you can experience some success. If you can make something small work then it is easier to find investors.

People, investors, are always attracted to success so if you can make something small successful the chances of people clamoring to invest are going to be much higher than if you just have an idea you want funded. Start your own entrepreneurial fund and try a business once a year. Chances are that if you start when you are 22 you’ll have something stick by the time you are 30.
