Book: Globalization: A Very Short Introduction by Manfred B. Steger

Rating: Good

Lesson Learned: Academic Globalization

Thomas Friedman is wonderful, but The World is Flat isn’t a good explanation of globalization. It is a good book and there is truth to what he says and I think it should be read, but it is written by a journalist. Stegers explanation of globalization is good. It is a highly technical read and the size fools you until you realize you are reading 6 pt font. Conclusion: Read Friedman on the plane, read something academic before you talk about the subject like you know it. I’m a Friedman lover, so don’t get the wrong impression, but I think he would even admit his book is antecdotal, which, again, is a good thing.
