Success and Failure

Watch Alain De Botton on TED. As a secular humanist De Botton examines what success and failure is. He singles out society and our idealized view of meritocracy without recognizing the ‘luck’ (I would say blessings) or randomness of who becomes successful and who fails. When we forget that it is by luck we are an American Citizen, good at writing, or creative in thinking we begin to think more of ourselves than we might should. If you are a spiritual person or not you have to give credit that the factors of your success are often more external occurrences than an inward focus or motivation. Of course, the latter have their place but it is foolish to think you alone pulled yourself up to where you are, and extending that narrative cuts a society along ‘us’ and ‘them’.
