The Success Initiative Syllabus

If you were to teach a high school Junior and Senior what it means to leverage their youth to build their future I think the syllabus below might be an effective class. Let me know what you think and what you would add/delete.

  • Prior to Week 1
    • Complete Winslow Profile and Clifton Strengths Finder
    • Reading: Now, Discover Your Strengths by Marcus Buckingham & Donald Clifton


  • Who are you and where are you going? Week 1
    • Introductions
    • Review Winslow and Clifton Strengths Finder 
    • Write personal Vision and Mission Statement
    • Create  1, 5, and 10 year personal goals; Create group goals
    • Decide to create micro-business or non-profit; brainstorm opportunities; chose one
    • Assign One page business/non-profit plan deliverables (research)


  • What will make you different? Week 2
    • Reading: Purple Cow: Transform Your Business by Being Remarkable by Seth Godin and The One Page Business Plan by Jim Horan
    • Create One Page Business Plan to achieve personal goals from above
    • Create  One Page Business Plan based on research of idea
    • Assign One Page Business Plan deliverables (operations and financials)


  • What is your focus? Week 3
    • Reading: Outliers: The Story of Success by Malcom Gladwell
    • How do we focus our talents? Group brainstorming session of how individuals can practice their talents.
    • Present on past weeks deliverables from micro-business/non-profit     
    • Assign One Page Business Plan  deliverables (marketing and sales strategy)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          


  • Building your network. Week 4
    • Reading: Talent is Never Enough by John Maxwell
    • Discuss how to build your network through:
      • Social media; blogging
    • Present on past weeks deliverables from micro-business/non-profit

  • Know your context. Week 5
    • Reading: Global Landscape book (thinking Globalization: A Short Introduction)
    • Work on business/non-profit, Sales Strategy
    •  Assign One Page Business Plan deliverables  (roll out continued)                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          


  • Taking risks and seeking opportunity. Week 6
    • The Dip: A Little Book that Teaches You When to Quit (And When to Stick) by Seth Godin
    • Project results and Project debrief
